WHAT AREAS DO YOU CURRENTLY COVER?
AJ Behaviour Solutions currently operates within a 10 mile radius of Bedford. Please see the accompanying map for locations covered.
WHAT IS POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT TRAINING?
A trainer that uses positive reinforcement may also describe themselves as a 'force-free' trainer. Positive reinforcement is essentially rewarding the behaviour that you want to see which in turn increases the likelihood of the dog repeating the desired behaviour. This type of training is non-confrontational and does not use aversive methods or that which focuses on what the dog did wrong but instead, shifts the focus onto what the dog did right. Research has shown that dogs are highly motivated by this approach, it sets the dog up for success and enhances the relationship between owner and dog. AJ Behaviour Solutions follows the code of conduct set out by the APDT and the business is built around these scientifically proven techniques.
HOW OLD DOES MY PUPPY NEED TO BE TO START TRAINING?
Because we offer 1-2-1 training in the home, this can be done from the time you get them at 8 weeks old. Start as you mean to go on! This is an ideal start before they have completed their 2nd vaccinations and offers the puppy some much needed mental stimulation. See our puppy packages for more information.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A TRAINING SESSION?
Dog training isn't just about teaching the dog, it is also importantly about teaching and equipping owners with the right skills. I will observe, discuss and analyse your dog during each session. Each session will involve chatting with owners and supporting them through exercises and situations that have been mutually agreed as a focus. Expect to get involved practically. There are no quick fixes in dog training and dogs are not machines so be prepared to commit to practising between sessions to see the best results. One training session, is very rarely enough despite what some TV programmes would have you believe.
WHAT DO I NEED TO HAVE READY FOR A TRAINING SESSION?
This can vary depending on the agreed focus of the session so I will always advise what is necessary at the time of booking. For sessions taking place outside - a good fitting harness and a dog lead (non-retractable) are essential. As we will use positive reinforcement, please have plenty of small training treats that your dog finds rewarding (you'll need more than you think), access to fresh drinking water and a favourite toy that your dog likes to interact with.
CAN A TRAINING SESSION INCORPORATE DIFFERENT TRAINING EXERCISES?
Absolutely, much like a group training class, sessions run for 1 hour (or 45 minutes if you have booked one of our puppy packages) and so a number of exercises can be incorporated at a pace that both dogs and owners are comfortable with. Depending on your reasons for booking the session, I will advise which exercises would be most helpful to prioritise.
DO YOU HAVE GROUP CLASSES I CAN ATTEND?
No, all our current services are one to one sessions.
I HAVE MORE THAN ONE DOG BUT WANT THEM BOTH TO BE INVOLVED, IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Each dog is an individual so they are best trained separately even if they have had some training. A 1 hour private session for instance could accommodate 2 dogs with one owner, but only one dog would be worked with at any one time. This allows you and the dog to get the maximum learning from the time you have with them, particularly in the initial stages of training. Please discuss with me your situation before booking to see what would work best for you and your situation.
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY IF I NEED TO CANCEL?
If you require an appointment to be cancelled please provide me with a minimum of 48 hours notice, this allows me enough time to refill the position. I currently work part time so you may find we have to reschedule at a later date than you were possibly anticipating. Whatever your reason, rescheduling or cancelling your appointment is completely fine so long as you give me adequate notice, which then won't incur a fee. If you need to cancel or reschedule within the 48 hour timeframe, 50% of the session fee will be charged - please bear in mind, last minute cancellations take a toll on small businesses. Thank you for understanding. Please read the terms and conditions carefully before booking.
DO YOU OFFER BEHAVIOUR CONSULTATIONS?
Not at the moment is the the short answer! However, I do hold relevant qualifications in Clinical Animal Behaviour and can advise you if you are unsure whether you need training or a behaviour consultation and point you in the direction of some accredited and experienced behaviourists.
